Abstract
This study examines how women use and experience public spaces in Curridabat, Costa Rica, within the context of the municipality’s “Sweet City” urban development initiative. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through structured participant observation (n=249) and semi-structured interviews (n=10) conducted across multiple public sites. Findings indicate that women’s use of public space is shaped by a combination of environmental features, infrastructural conditions, and social constraints. Elements such as shade, greenery, and seating were strongly associated with longer durations of stay and increased social interaction, highlighting the importance of environmental comfort in a tropical urban context. At the same time, a high proportion of passersby (59.59%, n=146) suggests that many public spaces function primarily as transit corridors rather than sites of sustained engagement. Barriers including inadequate lighting, discontinuous sidewalks, and safety concerns—particularly during evening hours—limit accessibility and reduce usage. Interview data further reveal that time constraints and caregiving responsibilities play a significant role in shaping women’s engagement with public space. While the “Sweet City” initiative has enhanced the environmental quality of certain areas, its impact remains uneven due to gaps in maintenance, infrastructure, and public awareness. These findings underscore the need for integrated urban planning approaches that address both physical design and social factors in order to create more inclusive, safe, and accessible public spaces.
Introduction
Curridabat, the eighteenth canton of San José Province, is a suburban municipality on the southeastern edge of Costa Rica’s capital. Established in 1929, it includes four districts and had a population of about 71,000 in 2022, with high density and a high Human Development Index (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos [INEC], 2022; United Nations Development Programme [UNDP], 2022). In recent years, the canton has become a leader in sustainable urban planning through its 2015 “Sweet City” initiative, which promotes biodiversity, ecological connectivity, and community wellbeing. By transforming natural spaces into public parks and expanding pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, the initiative seeks to integrate urban life with nature while encouraging social interaction and environmental stewardship (Municipalidad de Curridabat, 2015). Here, public spaces include parks, green areas, and other shared environments accessible to residents.
Despite its global recognition, the social impacts of this model—particularly for women—remain underexplored. Women often sustain community life while managing disproportionate caregiving responsibilities, which can limit their access to leisure and public space. Feminist perspectives highlight how time constraints, safety concerns, and social norms shape women’s experiences in these environments, as noted by Castro (2018). Understanding these dynamics is key to assessing how effectively Curridabat’s public spaces meet the needs of all residents.
Primary Objective
This study aims to examine how women use and experience public spaces in Curridabat through observed patterns of behavior and perceived environmental factors. By documenting spatial behavior and perception, the research addresses the following key questions:
Specific Research Questions
What activities do women engage in within public spaces, and how do these vary by time, setting, and social context?
How are environmental features associated with different types of use or levels of engagement?
What observable factors appear to facilitate or limit women’s use of public spaces?
How do women describe their experiences and awareness of the “Sweet City” initiative?
Study Site
The research was conducted in the Canton of Curridabat, San José Province, Costa Rica. Geographically, the site is situated in the Maria Aguilar River watershed, nestled within the western foothills and slopes of the Central Volcanic Range. This urban municipality is characterized by its high density and innovative network of restored green corridors. This study focuses on the perspectives of residents from one district within the Curridabat canton, Curridabat proper, a popular and largely residential hub for initiatives launched by the municipality. Focusing on a single district allows for a more in-depth and context-specific analysis of spatial use patterns within a defined urban environment. Specific locations were recorded individually in the interview Excel sheet.
